NYC cyclist killed by 100mph hit-and-run driver made last phone call to wife just minutes before crash

A Bronx bicyclist killed by a hit-and-run driver allegedly going 100 miles per hour had just called his wife to say he was 10 minutes from the safety of home, his grieving widow revealed.

Angelo Camera, a 51-year-old father, was biking across Bruckner Boulevard at Longwood Avenue in the South Bronx around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday when a driver blew through a red light and struck him, according to police.

He chatted with his wife, Vilmary Martinez, 51, just moments before the fatal crash as he headed home from his job as a mechanic.

“I called him that night. I told him I needed something, and he said, ‘I’ll be there in 10 minutes, babe,’” Martinez told the Daily News.

But when she called back 20 minutes later, another man answered — and soon police explained in horrific detail what had happened to her partner of 25 years.

“There was so much blood on the floor from his legs, from his arms, everywhere,” she told the paper. 

“The detective said he looked so bad. His leg was twisted, his arm was broken.”

“He took my life, my heart,” she said about the driver, who fled the scene and is still on the run.

A 2018 BMW M5501 was speeding east on Bruckner Blvd. when he flew through a red light and smashed into Camera, according to police.

Detectives told Martinez they believe the driver was going 100 miles per hour at the time, the Daily News reported.

The BMW then slammed into two unoccupied parked cars, a 2012 Camaro and a 2017 Lexus, and then sped off again, according to police.

While continuing to try and escape he hit a 2009 Hyundai Sonata while the driver, a 37-year-old woman, was stopped at a red light on Lafayette Avenue.

He then sideswiped a 2019 Volkswagen, which sent debris flying into a 2005 Chevy Explorer.

The driver then ditched the BMW, appears to have hopped into another car and fled, according to police. No arrests have been made.

Camera and the female Hyundai driver were both rushed to Lincoln Hospital. Camera was declared dead and the woman was listed in stable condition, cops said.

“I want justice. I want (cops) to catch them,” Martinez said. “I want him to go to jail. I want him to pay for what he did.”

Martinez and Camera are not legally married but have been together for 25 years and have a 19-year-old daughter together, she told the Daily News.
