Many directors would shrug their shoulders and leave things open to interpretation in their movies, having audiences guess what’s next. Well, that is not Obsession director Curry Barker, who has repeatedly talked about what actually happens after the end of the film, even extending to his next movie. Obviously, spoilers for the ending of Obsession follow.

Obsession ends with everyone dead except Nikki. Not obsessed One Wish Willow Nikki, but actual Nikki, now awoken from her curse when Bear dies. The other version of her wished for him to love her as much as she loves him right at the end, it seemed, but he was already on his way out, having overdosed on pills. That leaves Nikki sitting in a house with three dead bodies, the overdosed Bear, the face-smashed Sarah (where Nikki has her tattoos drawn all over her) and the shot-in-the-head Ian, who also now happens to have a billion dollars in cash in his house. Her fingerprints are on that gun, of course.

“She probably goes to jail,” Barker said in an interview with Cinemablend in June. “She’s probably going to prison for a very long time. There’s also like a billion dollars in Ian’s house and Ian’s on the floor, so she’s connected to that money in some way. Who knows what the cops are going to do, put it together as the story, but she’s not going to have a very good life I don’t think. It’s very sad.”

Fans hearing this explanation question whether this is a plot hole, as according to the One Wish Willow rules, if Ian dies, his wish should go with him, and the billion dollars should disappear. But it’s a bit murky if that applies to cash or just mind-warped people. Barker has admitted himself this whole wishing concept has holes, as in theory, this should be a world filled with insane results of wishes, dragons, unicorns and such.

But even if he’s a bit waffling here, it’s been confirmed that his next movie, Anything But Ghosts, is in the same universe as Obsession. It’s a horror comedy starring himself and Ian actor Cooper Tomlinson. But in that movie, Barker says, we hear what happens to Nikki, which echoes the above:

“There’s like a news article thing on the next movie where you hear a news anchor talking about a triple homicide [by] a woman.”

So, she’s caught and charged and possibly convicted. Clearly Nikki herself won’t appear in the next film (well, probably not), but that cameo would seal her fate. Barker has also discussed future concepts for an Obsession 2 or even an anthology series that focus on the outcomes of different kinds of wishes, with new casts. Interestingly, Barker has noted that the concept of the wish isn’t cursed, it’s just that what Bear wished for, removing the free will of another person, was messed up, hence all the horror that ensued. Interesting stuff from the director on all kinds of fronts.
