“Everything is under threat in the United States now.” Appearing on Le Figaro La Nuit, Douglas Kennedy expressed deep concern about the future of his country. The bestselling American author in France wandered through the streets of Paris alongside Thibaut Gauthier to present his new novel, out in French: L’homme qui n’avait pas assez d’une vie (The man who didn’t have enough of a life.)

Published by Belfond, it is the sequel, 28 years later, to The Big Picture, the author’s bestseller, which has sold more than three million copies. “We have a president who is a criminal, a thug, who is trying to change the rules,” Kennedy said.

The American writer paints a picture of a deeply divided America: “Everyone is angry and asking themselves, ‘Why did I vote for this guy?’”

Kennedy then lists everything he reproaches Donald Trump for.

“He has no respect for the United States. He has no respect for our Constitution. He has no respect for the separation of powers, which is the essential foundation of our democracy. There is something frankly comical about him, but at the same time he is obsessed with power.”

The author adds: “Everyone in the United States is wondering: will democracy continue, or will everything collapse? It is becoming more and more difficult. Could our country slide into an authoritarian regime?”

Kennedy points to one of his own books: “I’m not paranoid, but I wrote a work of speculative fiction. In 2045, the United States has become two separate states.”

“Maybe that’s what’s going to happen,” he concludes.

For those who want to explore the idea further, he invites readers to turn to the pages of Flyover, published in 2023.
