Oxford United player detained over fatal crash

A footballer from Nottinghamshire has been detained for causing the death of a motorist by dangerous driving.

Adam Chapman, 20, of Hillview Crescent, Clarborough, was sentenced to 30 months in a Young Offenders Institution.

His Vauxhall Corsa hit a Honda Civic driven by Tom Bryan, 77, from Retford, on 9 May 2009 on the A620 at North Wheatley in Nottinghamshire.

The Oxford United midfielder admitted the offence at an earlier hearing at Nottingham Crown Court.

Chapman was also disqualified from driving for five years.

In a statement, Oxford United Football Club said: "The club has and will continue to support Adam throughout the remainder of this process and we would like to thank all supporters for their messages of support to both Adam and the club.

"The club would again like to offer their deepest sympathies to the family of the deceased.

"Our thoughts go out to everybody who has been affected in this case."
