Parents reject 'suicide pact' claim over deaths

The parents of a student found dead with his friend in a hotel have rejected claims of a suicide pact and insisted it was a "tragic accident".

Robert Miller, 20, and Jim Robertson, 19, who were from Orkney, were found at the Ramada Jarvis hotel in Ayr after failing to check out on Wednesday.

James and Christine Miller said the suggestion of suicide was "completely unbelievable".

Investigations by Strathclyde Police were continuing.

There were media reports that the pair died from drug injections administered by a syringe connected to a laptop computer.

A statement from Mr and Mrs Miller said: "We are devastated at the news of Robert and Jim's deaths and are trying to come to terms with the loss of two wonderful lads of immense charm and ability.

"They had everything to live for, they were happy and had made plans for the future.

"The police have been excellent and their investigation is ongoing, but there are a number of indications that this was a tragic accident and not a 'suicide pact', as reported in some national newspapers."

An Edinburgh University spokesman confirmed Mr Robertson had been a student there.

He said: "This is an ongoing situation which is in the hands of the police. We send our heartfelt condolences to Mr Robertson's family."

A police spokesman said: "On 9 June, at around 1240 BST, the bodies of two men were found in a hotel in Ayr. At this time inquiries are continuing.

"However it does not appear to be suspicious. A full report will be sent to the procurator fiscal."
