Philip Larkin celebrations under way in Hull

A 25-week programme of events has started in Hull to celebrate the life of the late poet Philip Larkin.

Larkin, who lived in Hull for 30 years before his death in 1985, combined a celebrated writing career with his role as librarian at Hull University.

The events, which include celebrations, public artworks and performances will take place every day until 2 December, the 25th anniversary of Larkin's death.

The celebrations began at the Hull Truck Theatre on Saturday.

The theatre hosted the Philip Larkin Society's annual meeting, a lecture by Hull-born actor Barrie Rutter, plus readings and musical performances.

The events have been organised by Larkin25, a not-for-profit organisation.

Larkin25 chairman Graham Chester said: "We have created an extensive programme which we believe is not only worthy of Larkin, but also reflects his wider interests, has a sense of his dry humour and engages people from all walks of life in taking a new look at Larkin, poetry and the creative arts in general."
