Exeter City skipper Pierce Sweeney has left the club after 10 years.

The 31-year-old Irish defender was offered a new deal this summer but has turned it down "to pursue a new opportunity".

Sweeney initially joined the Grecians from Reading in July 2016 and made 435 appearances in all competitions.

"I've had a lot of decisions to make from a personal and professional point of view and the club have given me everything they could," he told the club website., external

"I just felt at this time in my career and life that I'm at a good age now where it is time to move on and see what is the next challenge myself elsewhere.

"The football club has been really patient and has shown me the utmost respect."

Sweeney briefly left the club in the summer of 2021 to sign for Swindon but returned just a month later without playing a competitive game for the Robins.

For a club that prides itself on blooding young players and moving them on, Pierce Sweeney's Exeter career was the opposite.

Handed his chance at first-team football by Paul Tisdale after moving from Reading a decade ago, the Irishman quickly established himself as a fans' favourite.

While not necessarily blessed with the greatest physical attributes Sweeney made up for it with his heart, determination and leadership.

He helped the club have arguably the most successful spell in their history - gaining promotion to League One in 2023 after some play-off final defeats.

Admired as much for his work and personality off the field as on it, the affable defender will be missed by many at St James Park.
