Police have hailed a peaceful Royal Ascot with only 10 arrests made over the five days - down from 80 last year.

More than 250,000 people attended the racecourse, which saw officers post updates on the social networking site Twitter for the first time.

In total, seven men and three women were held by officers on a range of offences, including drugs possession, theft and assault.

Last year saw 80 arrests during the event, which is attended by the Queen.

Supt Rob Povey said: "We have had a great crowd of people attending the races and have made only a handful of arrests during the week.

"I am pleased that the event has run smoothly and hope it has been enjoyable for everyone."

The event came to a close on Saturday with 13-2 joint favourite Starspangledbanner winning the Golden Jubilee Stakes.
