A Southampton man has had his letterbox set alight twice in what police described as apparently unmotivated attacks.

The man, 65, was unharmed after the fires triggered a smoke alarm.

The house in Tangmere Drive, Lordshill, was first targeted between midnight and 1000 BST on 1 June and again on Sunday between 0200 and 0310 BST.

The incidents could have been much more serious had the fires had time to spread, police said.

Det Con David Thomas, from Hampshire Constabulary, said: "It is very fortunate that no-one was hurt.

"We want to track down the person responsible as quickly as possible to prevent any further incidents."

Police are unclear of the motive behind the incidents or if they are linked.
