Police seize £2m worth of drugs in Derbyshire

A new police unit has seized drugs worth £2m and made more than 200 arrests in Derbyshire.

The Derby Proactive Unit was set up in June 2009 to act on tip-offs from the public about drugs in the city and South Derbyshire.

From June 2009 to 31 March 2010, the unit made 210 arrests for drugs offences, robbery, assault and money laundering.

Officers have seized heroin, cocaine, amphetamine and cannabis.

The unit, working with HM Customs, has also seized £36,000 in cash and £356,000 worth of tobacco.

Det Insp Tim Cadman, who manages the unit, said: "Previously it could take quite a bit of time from getting the information, building that up and then carrying out action.

"The creation of the proactive unit has allowed us to speed that process up and take action a lot quicker as they are a dedicated resource focusing solely on acting upon drugs information."
