Pretty Woman producer Steve Reuther has died from cancer at the age of 58.

His family said he passed away at his home in Santa Monica, California, on Saturday.

He began his career as the post boy at the William Morris talent agency in the late 1970s and went on to become a producer in the 1980s.

He was the executive producer on Dirty Dancing in 1987. His other credits include Pretty Woman and Francis Ford Coppola's The Rainmaker.

Reuther created a production company with actor Michael Douglas in the 1990s, producing The Rainmaker, The Ghost and the Darkness and Face/Off, starring John Travolta and Nicolas Cage.

He was also behind romantic comedy The Ugly Truth, starring Gerard Butler and Katherine Heigl, which went to number one at the UK and Ireland box office.

His latest project was a film called Steinbeck's Point of View, about a man dying of cancer who goes through a life-altering experience after talking to a plane crash survivor.

Reuther is survived by a daughter, his mother, two brothers and a sister.
