Considerable uncertainty surrounds the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's plans to visit Britain next month, with nobody apparently clear on what is actually happening.

Prince Harry had been expected to bring Meghan Markle and their two children across the Pond for what would have been their first trip back to his "homeland" since 2022.

However, with no apparent resolution to the dispute over taxpayer-funded top-level security for the family, the planned July visit now hangs in the balance.

The trip had been set to mark a dramatic reconciliation between King Charles, 77, and his youngest son. The monarch has not seen Prince Archie or Princess Lilibet in person for four years.

With the plans now thrown into doubt, a source told the Daily Mail's royal editor Rebecca English: "For the sake of family harmony the Palace would have been perfectly happy with a peaceful and low-key visit. Yet, once again, they have turned it into a soap opera. It's tiresome."

Harry, 41, lost a court battle last year to restore his entitlement to round-the-clock armed police protection whenever he and his family are in the country, having sought the same level of security afforded to the King and Prince William.

Nevertheless, it appeared that something "significant" had shifted regarding the arrangements when Team Sussex began briefing the press about an upcoming visit for the whole family. Then on Saturday, it emerged that Harry was now contemplating leaving Meghan and the children behind after all.

The Sussex PR machine highlighted numerous threats facing Harry and the online harassment directed at Meghan, 44, while asserting that even prominent celebrities such as Taylor Swift received "state-funded security". The singer was given an escort in London in 2024 after a terror plot targeting one of her concerts was thwarted.

A source told The Guardian: "Their plans to see family... and visit charitable causes close to the duke's heart have been pulled out from under their feet at the 11th hour. He's looking at every option to get the family here safely."

'It's turned into a disaster for the Sussexes'.

A spokesperson for the couple told People magazine: "The issue is whether appropriate and proportionate protective security is being provided throughout the entirety of the visit.

"The Duke continues to explore every available option to enable the visit to proceed safely and to give his children the opportunity to enjoy the UK," the spokesperson added.

English – widely regarded as having outstanding contacts at Buckingham Palace – concluded: "The upshot? No one is any the wiser and the Palace team is frantically scratching their heads.

"Those in royal circles believe the debacle has turned what could have been positive PR for the Sussexes into a disaster before they even set foot in the country."
