The owners of six puppies found dumped by the side of a road in Fife are being sought by animal welfare officers.

The litter were found inside a cardboard box in a lay-by on the B925, near Crossgates, on Wednesday at about 1700 BST.

The Scottish SPCA is appealing for information from motorists who saw the dogs being abandoned.

The four-week-old crossbreed puppies, four girls and two boys, had a rock placed on top of their box.

A motorist who found the puppies said he heard the "frightened" puppies cries coming from the box before calling the Scottish SPCA.

Insp John Chisholm, of the Scottish SPCA, arrived and took the puppies home with him for the night before taking them to the charity's Lanarkshire animal rescue and rehoming centre in Hamilton.

Insp Chisholm said: "We believe the puppies were dumped at the lay-by sometime on Wednesday afternoon.

"It's unlikely they were there for any longer than a couple of hours as the cardboard box was still fairly dry and in tact.

"This is a busy country road and the lay-by is used regularly by motorists so we are hopeful that someone may have witnesses the puppies being abandoned."
