Chris Drury held out on trading Vincent Trocheck and was able to tailor the return for the here and now, just like the Rangers president and general manager insinuated would be his mission in the organization’s retooling message to the fans.
And after a busy first day of the free agency window, the Blueshirts look like a redesigned team with notable changes to multiple key areas of need.

In a trade with the Mammoth on Wednesday, Drury was able to fetch top-four defenseman Sean Durzi, top forward prospect Cole Beaudoin and a third-round pick in the 2027 draft in exchange for the 32-year-old Trocheck, The Post first reported.
The Blueshirts had been seeking the right trade partner for a Trocheck deal since the weeks leading up to the trade deadline March 6.
Holding firm on his asking price and ultimately keeping the veteran center through the end of last season, Drury most notably parlayed Trocheck into a young defensive piece and a high-end prospect who is turning pro this year.
Durzi, 27, is a bona fide top-four defenseman and is part of several moves the Rangers have made since the NHL draft this past weekend to fortify their back end ahead of next season.
Regarded as an offensive-minded puck mover, Durzi — a righty shot — can play on both sides and slot onto the second power-play unit. He’s signed through the next two seasons at $6 million per year before he is set to become an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2028.
The 6-foot-1, 196-pound blueliner also has a 10-team no-trade list over that span.
The inclusion of an NHL player in a deal for Trocheck was crucial, but the prospect pool was bolstered as well.
Beaudoin becomes one of — if not the — top prospect in the Rangers system after this trade.
A first-round pick in 2024 (No. 24), Beaudoin is coming off a career-best 88-point campaign (33 goals, 55 assists in 54 games) while serving as captain for the Barrie Colts of the Ontario Hockey League.
Following it up with 10 goals and 19 assists in 15 playoff games, Beaudoin helped his team reach the OHL championship series.
The Ottawa native was also a point-per-game player for Canada during the 2026 IIHF World Junior Championship, tallying three goals and four assists in seven games in a bronze-medal finish.
The expectation is that Beaudoin will turn pro this year and report to the Rangers AHL affiliate in Hartford.
A trade involving Trocheck had long been the expectation since the organization announced its intentions to retool. The Rangers were believed to be seeking a first-round pick, but Beaudoin is considered an equal asset as a premier prospect.
Trocheck, who preferred to stay in the East but is now headed West, touched several aspects of the Rangers game over his four seasons in New York. A contributor in the top six, on the power play and penalty kill, the Pittsburgh native played a key role in the team’s Presidents’ Trophy-winning season and run to the conference final in 2024.
Appearing in 313 games with the Rangers, Trocheck finishes his New York tenure with 89 goals and 164 assists. He posted nine goals and 12 assists in 23 postseason games as well.
