Four recycling centres are to close in Lancashire, it has been announced.

Lancashire County Council said closing the centres in Langho, Padiham, Rufford and at Everest Road in St Annes will save £1m every year.

The news comes after an all-party review was carried out into recycling across the county.

Councillor Geoff Driver said it should not lead to rubbish being dumped illegally as several other recycling sites are nearby.

He said: "The average person goes to one of these centres between one and three times a year.

"The fact that they might have to go an extra three, four or even five miles to a site is not going to lead them to fly-tip."

Announcing the closures, the council said residents are currently offered doorstep recycling collections, as well as access to 19 other recycling centres across the county.

It also plans to build two new state-of-the-art waste treatment plants at Thornton and Leyland.

The council is also looking at possible sites for a new tip in the Lancaster district to replace centres at Salt Ayre, Lancaster, and Keerbridge, Carnforth.
