Repairs to Middlesbrough Transport Bridge finish early

Work to make Middlesbrough's historic Transporter Bridge ready for its centenary celebrations have been completed ahead of schedule.

The Grade-II listed structure was closed to the public on 16 May so that electric motors fitted almost 100 years ago could be replaced.

The bridge, which carries passengers and vehicles on a suspended gondola, celebrates its centenary next year.

Work was due to last until 14 June, but the bridge reopens later.

Paul Thompson, Middlesbrough Council's executive member for transport, said: "The Transporter is an iconic landmark which is recognised around the world, and we can be truly proud of it.

"It's fantastic that, nearly 100 years after it first carried people across the river, it is in full working order and looks as good as the day it was opened."

The 225ft (69m) high bridge is one of Teesside's most recognisable landmarks and is seen as a symbol of the area's industrial heritage.
