Up to £1m is set to be spent on improving shopping areas in Sunderland.

City council bosses are considering spending the cash on a variety of projects, including a revamp of Christmas street lights.

The move follows recent improvements to Athenaeum Street, Union Street and in the High Street West area, which saw new paving and extra litter squads.

A city council spokesman said improving areas used by shoppers was an ongoing priority.

Bryan Charlton, who oversees regeneration as part of his cabinet portfolio, added: "People will have already seen improvements with the street scene and we are looking at more ways of improving the city centre."

Councillors are due to discuss the improvement programme on 3 June.
