A new £10m expansion of the Glenlivet Distillery in Speyside has been opened by the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay.

Chivas Brothers said the investment represented a 75% increase in production capacity.

The move is aimed at capitalising on "buoyant international markets".

The Glenlivet Visitor Centre will reopen on Saturday to allow members of the public to see inside the extended distillery.

Newly-appointed master distiller Alan Winchester said: "The opening is a momentous occasion in the long and proud history of the Glenlivet Distillery.

"It was a privilege to be involved with the new building and we are honoured to have such distinguished company to mark the occasion."

Mr Winchester spoke to Prince Charles during the opening event.

Local designers and contractors were involved in the expansion.

Christian Porta, Chivas Brothers chief executive, said it was a "stunning" development.
