Sara Foster is not pressed about her dad David Foster’s 35-year age gap with his wife, Katharine McPhee.

“It’s not easy coming into this family,” Sara, 45, said during the Tuesday, June 30, episode of Kristin Cavallari’s “Let’s Be Honest” podcast. “It’s not easy, and I think they’ve gotten so much, not s***, but the age difference.”

Foster, 76, wed McPhee, 42, in 2019. They share a son named Rennie, 5.

“Everyone has an opinion about something,” Sara continued. “They’re 12 years in, and they are happy. … She’s a fully consenting lady, this is not, like, some child bride. She is in her 40s.”

Sara spoke candidly about her relationship with the “amazing” McPhee as the conversation continued.

“I think it’s hard being a stepparent, obviously. I think you want to ride the line of wanting your partner’s kids to like you and wanting to show up as a motherly figure,” Sara said. “But you also have to have respect for the real mom … the biological mom.”

She added, “I think it’s a tough balance, and I think she does it really well.”

David is the father of six kids, including Sara and Rennie. He welcomed daughter Allison, 56, at 20 years old. She was put up for adoption following her birth but reconnected with David in adulthood. He and ex-wife B.J. Cook share daughter Amy, 53. David welcomed Sara with second wife Rebecca Dyer, along with daughter Erin, 43, and son Jordan, 40.

When David and McPhee welcomed Rennie in February 2021, the music mogul had a rather diplomatic answer for people criticizing him for having a child in his 70s. He did admit, however, that it was “valid” for people to ask questions.

“I think that I can offer one thing to Rennie even though I won’t be around when he’s 50 or 40 even, or 30 maybe,” David told People at the time. “I think I can offer him wisdom from my 72 years on the planet. And maybe that’s not a bad trade-off. I hope so.”

Despite David and McPhee’s age-gap drama, the Fosters have formed a pretty solid family unit.

Sara explained during Tuesday’s podcast episode that McPhee isn’t a traditional mother figure to her since they’re so close in age.

“Totally, I look at her as a sister, but she is my stepmom. She’s my dad’s wife,” Sara added. “So, I think it’s normal for her to come in and kind of take over. She really doesn’t do that.”
