Sir Ben Kingsley gets star on Hollywood Walk of Fame

British actor Sir Ben Kingsley has become the latest luminary to have his own star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame.

Actor Bruce Willis was among those on hand to see the 66-year-old Oscar-winner receive his accolade.

"Standing here today amongst you is one of the many things I thought growing up in England that would never happen to me," Sir Ben said on Thursday.

It was "a privilege", he added, to be "an enduring part of the architecture of this extraordinary city".

The Hollywood Boulevard ceremony coincided with the US release of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, in which Sir Ben has a leading role.

Jerry Bruckheimer, the film's producer, paid tribute to the actor on Thursday, calling him "quite simply a genius".

Born in Scarborough in 1943 as Krishna Pandit Bhanji, Sir Ben worked on stage with the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) before moving into films.

Best known for his Oscar-winning performance in 1982's Gandhi, he went on to be Oscar-nominated for his roles in Bugsy, Sexy Beast and House of Sand of Fog.

His other memorable films include Schindler's List and Roman Polanski's film of Oliver Twist, in which he played Fagin.

Recent movies include Martin Scorsese's psychological thriller Shutter Island and Teen Patti, his first Bollywood film.

Composer and songwriter Randy Newman will be the next notable to be recognised with a star on the Hollywood Boulevard sidewalk.

Comedian Eric Idle and Disney/Pixar's John Lasseter are scheduled to attend his unveiling ceremony, to be held on 2 June.
