Like plenty of superhero movies before it, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has plenty of references to its source material. The first trailer has shots of Spidey in action that look like comic book splash pages, and mimic different comic covers. Several of the covers referenced are where specific characters debuted—including Amazing Fantasy #15, the first issue to feature Spider-Man himself.

In a new featurette, Tom Holland and director Destin Daniel Cretton discussed the process that went into recreating these covers. He revealed the scenes were filmed at 420 frames per second, which is “impossible” to act in, but perfect for an attention grabbing shot or two. With Holland wired up, it only took the actor “two or three takes” to nail pose, which was a real eye-opening moment for Cretton. To mimic the cover of Scorpion uppercutting Spidey, Holland had to “reverse swan dive [while] we’re yanking him up into the air towards the camera. It was a real awakening to how much control Tom has over every muscle in his body.”

Holland’s previously talked about working with Cretton to make Brand New Day its best self and with genuine intent. Recreating these covers was “a lot of fun” for him, and reflects what makes this feel like a different thing than the Home trilogy. It’s clear Holland and Cretton are proud of these scenes, which have won over fans hoping for the best live-action Spider-Man movie in years. There’s probably more comic recreations in Spider-Man: Brand New Day that are under webs—and we’ll have to wait until July 31 to see them all.
