From September the streaming service will label synthetic personas to help listeners spot AI‑generated music.

From September, Spotify will attach an "AI Persona" badge to certain artist pages so listeners can tell when the music may have been produced with artificial intelligence.

The badge will also keep AI‑generated profiles out of Spotify's editorial and algorithmic recommendations, giving more exposure to music created by human artists. Artists can choose to disclose that they are an AI Persona, and Spotify will run its own checks to spot profiles that appear synthetic. Listeners will be able to flag accounts they suspect are AI‑driven for review.

The initiative dovetails with the European Union's push for greater AI transparency under the Digital Services Act, which requires platforms to clearly label automated content. European creators have welcomed the step, saying it could level the playing field against mass‑uploaded AI tracks that dominate charts across the continent.

"Although there's a broad spectrum in how artists use AI as a creative tool, the question of whether a profile represents an actual human is one where Spotify can help make a clear determination," the company said in a press release. "This badge is about the artist's public identity, not about how the music was made."

Concerns over AI‑generated music are rising throughout the industry. In June, French music streaming service Deezer reported that AI‑generated tracks made up more than half of daily new uploads, prompting it to remove fraudulent streams and dormant files.

EU regulators are watching the trend, warning that unchecked AI music could undermine copyright enforcement and market fairness. Spotify disclosed that it removed 75 million spam tracks in the past year, many of which were low‑quality AI creations.

One early example of an AI‑driven act was the fictitious band The Velvet Sundown. Marketed as a four‑member psychedelic rock group, the project listed vocalist and "mellotron sorcerer" Gabe Farrow among its members. After Reddit users questioned its authenticity, the band's profile was updated to describe itself as a "synthetic music project guided by human creative direction".

The phenomenon has also reached traditional charts, with AI‑generated country project Breaking Rust topping the Billboard Country Digital Song Sales chart with "Walk My Walk", a track that has amassed close to 30 million streams on Spotify.
