State-of-the-art college opening in Leicestershire

A new £15m state-of-the-art college has been officially opened in Melton Mowbray.

The new John Ferneley College has been built on the site of the former John Ferneley School and takes boys and girls aged between 11 and 16.

As well as rainwater recycling, the college has its own wind turbine generating 20% of its power.

Chris Robinson, the college principal, said the building was divided up into learning zones.

He said: "In the traditional school, every 50 minutes a bell goes, and you move somewhere else - what an utter waste of time and poor organisation. (There are) no bells in this school.

"We've designed the whole building around five learning zones - culture, communication, performance, enterprise and discovery, and each of these zones is blocked up for half-day and whole-day timetables."
