State pensioners could get nine freebies and discounts worth £14,289 in July - full list of support
State pensioners across the UK could access up to £14,289.10 in Government freebies and discounts, offering crucial relief as household budgets face mounting pressure from rising costs.
The financial support comes at a critical moment, with energy prices having climbed 13 per cent yesterday following Ofgem's price cap adjustment, adding approximately £221 annually to typical household bills.
This increase translates to roughly £18 extra each month for families using both gas and electricity, driven by global energy price spikes linked to Middle East tensions.
The available funds come through various Department for Work and Pensions schemes designed to help those struggling with escalating living expenses, potentially delivering thousands of pounds in savings to qualifying pensioners.
Pension Credit serves as the cornerstone benefit, now valued at an average of £4,300 yearly following a 4.8 per cent increase in April, according to the DWP.
The payment tops up weekly income to £238 for single claimants or £363.25 for couples, but its true value lies in unlocking additional support.
Sarah Pennells, consumer finance specialist at Royal London, said: "Pension Credit is a valuable benefit because it is a 'gateway' benefit. That means, if you're able to claim it, you may also be able to get help with housing costs (through Council Tax discount and Housing Benefit or Support for Mortgage Interest)."
She added: "However, hundreds of thousands of people are missing out on Pension Credit. Our research showed that two in five people over State Pension age hadn't checked to see if they were entitled to Pension Credit."
Housing-related support represents a significant portion of the available assistance.
Renters receiving the Guarantee element of Pension Credit qualify for maximum Housing Benefit from their local authority, potentially worth around £1,000 annually and in some cases covering rent entirely.
Council Tax reductions offer further savings, with discounts varying by local authority from approximately £300 for a quarter reduction on a standard Band D property to complete exemption worth up to £1,600.
Those aged 75 and over who claim Pension Credit can also obtain their television licence at no cost, saving £180 following this year's fee increase from £174.50.
Households still using black and white sets face a reduced annual charge of £60.50.
NHS-related benefits provide substantial additional value for those receiving the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit.
While prescriptions remain free throughout Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, English residents typically face a £9.90 charge per item, frozen at this rate for the 2026/27 tax year.
However, Guarantee Credit recipients in England pay nothing for their prescriptions, with this entitlement extending to partners included in the claim.
Eye care assistance includes vouchers towards spectacles or contact lenses, potentially worth up to £215 depending on prescription requirements, according to Martin Lewis's MoneySavingExpert.
Dental treatment represents perhaps the most valuable NHS benefit, with qualifying pensioners entitled to free care ranging from routine check-ups to complete dentures, potentially amounting to £1,000 in annual savings.
Attendance Allowance offers additional support for pensioners with disabilities requiring personal care, paying £76.90 weekly at the lower rate or £114.60 at the higher rate since April.
Those needing regular assistance both during the day and at night may qualify for the higher amount, with around 56 condition categories potentially eligible, delivering up to £5,959.20 annually.
A smaller but useful perk comes through Royal Mail, with Pension Credit claimants paying just £62 for the 12-month redirection service rather than the standard £87 fee.
Applications for Pension Credit can be submitted up to four months before reaching State Pension age and backdated by three months.
Claimants can apply online through GOV.UK or telephone the Pension Credit claim line on 0800 99 1234.
