A 17-year-old man is said to be in a very serious condition after being struck by a hit-and-run driver in Glasgow city centre.

The teenager was crossing St Vincent Street at the junction with Hope Street at about 2310 BST on Wednesday when he was knocked down.

He was taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary and later transferred to the city's Southern General Hospital.

Police said the car, which failed to stop, was a dark-coloured hatchback.

It was last seen heading up St Vincent Street after hitting the teenager.

Insp Steven Meikle, of Strathclyde Police, said: "I would appeal to anyone who was near St Vincent Street at around 2300 hours or who witnessed the crash, or anyone who saw a car matching the description in the area to contact the road policing department.

"I would also ask if anyone has information on this car or the person who was driving to come forward."
