As many as ten people stuck in tailbacks from a crash on the M25 were taken to hospital.
The crash happened at junction J6 Godstone south of Caterham and involved two vehicles during a red alert heatwave.
The South East Coast Ambulance Service says more than 10 people have been hospitalised, ‘primarily with minor and heat-related conditions after being stuck in traffic.’
A huge road closure stretches clockwise from the M25 in Surrey to Kent onto the M26 towards Maidstone.
Motorists were seen stepping out of their cars onto the searing road as traffic is being held, which the emergency services strongly advise against.
Some drivers took their dogs out for a walk on the carriageway, with one motorist seeing parked on the lined verges, usually reserved for the emergency vehicles to drive past to get to a crash scene.
One motorist caught in the M25 closure said he missed his first flight in 50 years after the ‘horrific’ crash.
‘No point stressing, some poor soul might not be going home today,’ he said.
National Highways said the motorway is currently blocked in both directions while an air ambulance works at the scene.
Traffic is stationary on the UK’s busiest motorway during the ongoing heatwave.
Temperatures are approaching 30C in the area, while the road surface is likely to be several degrees hotter.
