Ten people were arrested for football-related disorder in North Yorkshire as England's World Cup bid kicked off on Saturday night.

Five men were held after fighting broke out during an event at Scarborough's Open Air Theatre, where the match was shown on a big screen to 3,000 fans.

Four of the men were given fixed penalty notices for disorder, the fifth was released without charge.

Five people were held after further incidents in Scarborough and Harrogate.

The force said there were no reported incidents elsewhere in the county.

Ch Supt Iain Spittal, of North Yorkshire Police, said the incident at the theatre was "extremely disappointing, particularly as the occasion was billed as a family event".

He said: "We understand a small incident of disorder broke out inside the theatre which was dealt with by security staff. Unfortunately the incident continued once the offenders left the venue.

"This sort of behaviour will not be tolerated and a robust stance will be taken against any future incidents of this nature. We will be working with the organisers to prevent this type of thing happening again."

Mr Spittal said the theatre incident aside, the force was "pleased that the vast majority of fans and other revellers were well-behaved and had a good time".
