Thames Maidenhead Bridge reopens after resurfacing work

A 300-year-old Grade I-listed bridge across the Thames has reopened after being resurfaced.

The work was part of a nine-week scheme to renovate and strengthen the Thames Maidenhead Bridge, in Maidenhead.

The pavement was replaced with York stone and approved by English Heritage as part of the makeover, over four nights .

Windsor and Maidenhead council said the work was essential and thanked motorists for their patience.

Highways councillor Colin Rayner said: "I have always been very keen for people to appreciate that this work was absolutely essential to maintain the condition of this wonderful piece of our local history.

"If we had not committed to carrying out these repairs we would undoubtedly have had to reduce the load capacity of the bridge which would have had major implications for heavier vehicles."

Repairs to the stonework under the bridge arches is continuing from barges on the river and is due for completion at the end of the month.

This work is not affecting traffic on the bridge.
