The Amedee Lighthouse was commissioned in 1861 because of the number of boats shipwrecked while entering the lagoon in Noumea. The 56 metre tall structure was cast in sections in France, before being divided into 1,265 pieces, transported to New Caledonia and re-assembled.

In 1967 Weekend Magazine joined two of the lighthouse keepers, who needed to climb the 294 steps each day to light the kerosene lamp and perform vital maintenance work.
