On 30th July 1980, the archipelago comprising about 80 islands of the New Hebrides became the Republic of Vanuatu. Independence Day was marked in Port Vila with a simple ceremony and a speech by the President of Vanuatu, George Sokomanu, who claimed that the greatest challenge facing Vanuatu is that of building national unity.
