Thieves stole more than £18,000 in cash during an overnight raid at Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford.

Surrey Police said a safe and its contents were taken from an office at the Egerton Road hospital in the early hours of Tuesday.

The thieves forced a door and broke a window to get into the area, which is part of the hospital's catering facility.

Detectives have appealed for witnesses to contact officers.

Det Con Dan Chant said: "This would appear to have been a planned offence and I would urge anyone who may have any details which could help officers with the investigation into this burglary to call Surrey Police as soon as possible.

"Similarly if someone is aware of a unit, which could be the safe, which may have been dumped in the locality I would like to find out more about the discovery."
