Two men and a woman have been arrested over the death of a mother-of-four in South Lanarkshire at the weekend.

Gail Russell, 26, was stabbed in the street after a disturbance in Small Crescent, Blantyre, at about 2115 BST on Saturday.

Strathclyde Police said two men, aged 29 and 22, and a 24-year-old woman, had been arrested in connection with the incident.

A report is being sent to the Procurator Fiscal.

Det Insp David Tassie, the officer in charge of the investigation, said the local community had been left "genuinely shocked and outraged" by the incident.

He added: "The support we have received from the local community has been quite literally overwhelming.

"My officers and indeed Gail's family are extremely grateful for this support.

"I would like to reassure the community that we have increased our patrols in the Blantyre area, and this will continue for the time-being. If anyone has any concerns, please do not hesitate to approach them."

The three people arrested were expected to appear at Hamilton Sheriff Court on Tuesday.
