Tottenham Hotspur are on the brink of landing a substantial financial windfall - thanks to a sell-on clause included in Troy Parrott's transfer to AZ Alkmaar in 2024. Spurs negotiated a reported sell-on fee of 20 per cent as part of that £6.7m switch to the Eredivisie.

The former Spurs striker has flourished since that transfer to the Netherlands, netting 10 goals in his opening seven matches before a knee ligament injury in August sidelined him until October. Parrott recovered strongly with 16 goals in 28 fixtures and helped his country secure a World Cup play-off spot, drawing considerable interest ahead of this summer's transfer window.

Real Betis are reportedly in advanced negotiations with Alkmaar over a £17.1m transfer for the former Spurs academy graduate, having also attracted attention from West Ham United. However, a switch to the Hammers collapsed after the two clubs failed to reach an agreement.

West Ham had a £15m offer turned down for Parrott earlier this summer, falling below Alkmaar's £25m valuation, which if met in full, would have netted Spurs £5.1m. Spurs remain set to receive the sell-on clause, though, with Betis now the favourites to secure Parrott and close to pipping FC Porto and RB Leipzig to the striker's signature.

BBC Sport reports that an agreement between Betis and Alkmaar is now nearing completion, with Spurs set to pocket a welcome windfall of approximately £3.4m. The news emerges just days after Parrott's AZ teammate Mexx Meerdink revealed his disappointment at his strike partner's impending departure following the 4-1 victory over FC Utrecht.

Parrott sat out the emphatic triumph with a suspected minor injury, though Meerdink's inadvertent revelation strongly hinted at an imminent exit.

Meerdink said: "It is a shame that he is leaving us, but for me it is a great opportunity to prove myself. He deserves a good move. Hopefully he can make a good move. And then it will be my time. Am I getting a big head? No way, I'll just stay true to myself."

The financial boost would be a significant fillip for Roberto De Zerbi's squad in the closing weeks of the transfer window. Spurs have been amongst the most active Premier League clubs following two successive disappointing seasons.

Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes, Jan Paul Van Hecke, Marcos Senesi, Andy Robertson and Martin Dubravka have all arrived this summer as the club looks to breathe new life into their ranks.

They have equally recouped considerable sums in transfer fees, with Djed Spence, Cristian Romero, Will Lankshear, Luka Vuskovic, Alfie Devine, Ashley Phillips, Alejo Veliz and Manor Solomon all departing on permanent deals.
