Motorists are being warned of delays as work on a £1.3m project to upgrade a gas mains network in Poole begins.

Scotia Gas Network (SGN) will replace 3km (1.9 miles) of the Victorian cast-iron gas mains in the Ashley Road area with plastic piping over 12 weeks.

The work, starting from the road's junction with Becher Road, will progress to Mansfield Road junction and Constitution Hill Road roundabout.

SGN said it is working with the Borough of Poole to "minimise disruption".

The firm's construction manager John Cake said: "Although there may be some short-term disruption, this investment will mean that the area's gas supply will continue to be safe and reliable long into the future."
