An aide to Washington D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray’s 2010 campaign has been hit with federal charges in connection with the campaign.

Thomas W. Gore was charged Monday with three counts of using fake names on contributions and one of destroying evidence under investigation, NBC4 in Washington reports.

ANCHOR: We have more breaking news now here in the district. Criminal charges are coming in connected to Mayor Gray's campaign. Tom Sherwood joins with us the latest that.

TOM SHERWOOD: The mayor’s 2010 campaign has under investigation important more than a year. Just this morning criminal charges were filed in federal court against one of the assistant treasurers, Thomas W. Gore. The U.S. Attorney’s document says he was charged with three counts of using fake names on contributions and one count of destroying evidence under an investigation. These are very serious charges. I believe they are misdemeanors at this point. It is important to note this is the first criminal charges in this year-long investigation into Mayor Gray's campaign.

SHERWOOD: It’s his campaign. How much did the mayor know? He’s a detailed person. Some people say, maybe he doesn't know much about the way the campaign was run because it started late--very fast moving. On the other hand, the mayor is very detailed. He wants to know everything about everything he does. The question is did he know about some of these things? That's kind of the overall umbrella of this investigation. But the important thing is that this is his first criminal charge in this investigation. So we’ll watch and see what happens. The way that information comes in, it looks like Mr. Gore will plead guilty to this in the coming days.

SHERWOOD: The mayor is in Las Vegas as we talked about at the beginning of the show. This is just breaking. We will be finding out a lot more as we go through day.
