Welsh Athletics Championships: Adele Nicoll defends shot put title

Adele Nicoll defended her shot put title with a best throw of 16.96m at the Welsh Athletics Championships.

The Winter Olympian, who competed in both the mono bob and two women's bobsleigh events at Milano Cortina in February, pulled out of last weekend's UK Championships with injury.

The 29-year-old returned to action with a series of competitive throws in Leckwith, Cardiff.

"While the distance wasn't what I wanted, we did see the consistent technique," said Nicoll, whose winning effort came in the second round.

"My goal is to be ready for the Commonwealth Games and throw far in Glasgow."

Alex Azu, who finished sixth at the UK Championships last weekend, took gold in the men's 200m in a time of 21.27 seconds. Keeley Little won the women's 200m in 24.10.

Tokyo 2020 Olympian Joe Brier won the men's 400m final in 46.14, while Millie Webb edged Ffion Roberts by 0.04 to win the women's 400m in 55.64.

Thomas Wilcock won the men's 110m hurdles in a time of 13.83 and Dani Hales took the women's title in 13.59.

Commonwealth Games-bound Thomas Walley won the men's pole vault after finishing second in the UK Championships, with his best of 5.10m beating Will Lane and Arthur Reilly on 5.00.

Amelia Fettis took gold in the women's hammer throw with 58.06m while Mike Jenkins won the men's discus with a best throw of 53.99.

Harrison Walsh beat fellow Wales team-mate Aled Sion Davies in the men's para ambulant discus.

Walsh threw 56.08 to finish ahead of second-placed Davies, with the pair both competing in Glasgow at the Commonwealth Games this summer having won bronze and gold respectively in Birmingham four years ago.

Jac Sheehan won the para seated shot with a throw of 7.90 in the fifth round to overhaul Kieran Jones' 7.71.

Ellie Bowen threw 6.20 as she prepares for her Commonwealth Games debut at 17.

Bethan Davies added the Welsh title to her British title as she won the women's 5km race walk.

Fresh from winning silver in the UK Championships, Guy Thomas took gold in the men's race.

In a very competitive men's 800m final, Thomas Loynes beat Henry Evans by 0.01s to take gold in a time of 1:57.82. Imogen Tanner won the women's event in 2:11.06

Lauren Hill won the women's triple jump, with her sixth round leap of 12.45 enough to edge out Amelia Gray by a centimetre.

Nahbi Odeh won the men's triple jump with a first-round jump of 15.34 while Benji Pearson won the men's javelin with a throw of 68.06m in the fifth round.
