Wheelie bin blaze hall rebuild examined

A series of options are being examined for rebuilding a village hall in Dumfries and Galloway destroyed by a wheelie bin fire.

The blaze ripped through the Cairnryan site last summer.

It resulted in what the local council described as the "total loss" of a vital community facility.

The authority is now to meet to consider how best to invest the insurance money due after the fire gutted the building.

Three options will be presented to the local Wigtown area committee.

A report by council officers says their preferred course of action would be to rebuild the facility on the same site and in the same form as it previously existed.

Another possibility would be to reconfigure the building.

The final option would be to settle on a cash basis and invest the money in other village halls.

Recent condition surveys estimate such properties in the Wigtownshire area will require repairs costing nearly £1.5m over the next five years.
