Why Not All of Céline Dion’s Fans Appreciated her Mother’s Day Message
On her social media accounts on Sunday, May 10, Céline Dion posted a tender archival photo in which she appears smiling beside her mother, Thérèse, who died on January 17, 2020, at the age of 92.
In the caption, the recording artist expressed her gratitude toward the woman who shaped her life, on Quebec’s Mother’s Day. “Your strength, your tenderness, and your love has shaped who I am. You remain with me...quietly guiding, and so deeply felt in my life and in the lives of your grandchildren. As the mother to René-Charles, Nelson, and Eddy, I’m reminded every day how powerful that love is…and how beautifully it carries forward in all that we do.
Today, and always, we honor you. - Celine’”
It was an intimate and sincere declaration in which she emphasized how maternal love continues to be passed down through generations.
In the comments section, many fans also paid tribute to the woman affectionately known by many as “Mama Dion.” Several users shared memories or messages of support for the singer.
“Always in our hearts, Mama Dion,” wrote one admirer.
Another added: “Such a beautiful message for your mother, Céline. She will always remain in our hearts.”
Some testimonies were particularly moving. “I had the honor of being hugged by your mother one day, and I cried afterward,” one user wrote, moved by the memory of that encounter.
But emotion quickly gave way to controversy.Several Quebec and French-speaking followers strongly criticized the singer for choosing English to pay tribute to her own mother, an iconic figure of Quebec’s French-speaking culture.
“Your mama spoke French to you,” one user wrote bitterly.
“Not even able to write to her in French…” lamented another.
For many online commenters, the language choice in such a personal message was far from insignificant. They felt that a tribute addressed to Thérèse Tanguay-Dion should naturally have been written in French—the family’s language of the heart.
