Woman who died after Suffolk Great East Swim is named

A swimmer who died after becoming ill during a race in Suffolk has been named as a 35-year-old woman from Leicester.

Tracey Rammell was among 3,000 people competing in The Great East Swim at Alton Water reservoir in Stutton, near Ipswich, on Saturday.

Ms Rammell was helped out of the water and treated at the scene before being taken to Ipswich Hospital, where she died at about noon.

Her family said: "She died doing something that she really enjoyed."

"We are all devastated by the death of Tracey on Saturday," the family statement said.

"Tracey was a regular swimmer who loved the outdoors and she died doing something that she really enjoyed."

Event organisers Nova International said it offered its deepest sympathy and condolences to the woman's family and friends.

A Nova International spokesman said: "In the case of a fatality there is a strictly planned procedure laid down with the professional organisations that we adhere to.

"We are unable to make any further comment at this stage."

The one-mile swim is one of several held across the UK for charity.

The first Great East Swim was held in September last year when 1,300 people took part.
