The fire started in the kitchen of a ground-floor flat in James Close Sheltered Housing, Worcester, at about 2120 BST on Tuesday.
Smoke filled a communal corridor and two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus led the elderly residents out of the building. No-one was injured.
The fire was put out 30 minutes later and the cause of the fire is unknown.
