Work has started on a £13m university campus in Darlington.

Teesside University is hoping to open the complex, next to the existing Darlington College, in June next year.

The site will cater for 1,200 students, the majority of them part-time, in what the university described as a "major expansion of higher education".

The building, which has been funded by the university, regeneration agency One NorthEast and Darlington Council, will cover 4,000 sq m.

Graham Henderson, Teesside University's vice chancellor, said: "The university has a long history of widening access to higher education within the Tees Valley.

"Darlington's pivotal location provides us with a number of exciting new development opportunities, particularly in relation to our rapidly-expanding programme of work with regional and national employers."

John Williams, leader of Darlington Council, added: "Many people and organisations both local and regional have come together to make this happen.

"The whole community of Darlington welcomes the campus and we will continue to work with the university to help them to thrive in the town."
