The start of building work on a new £6.1m premature baby unit in Bath will be marked by the cutting of turf later.

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the Royal United Hospital is being funded jointly by the NHS and the Forever Friends Appeal.

The appeal now has less than £500,000 left to raise. Funds were previously raised through 'buy a virtual brick' appeal.

Building work is expected to be completed by the autumn of 2011.
