Worker crushed at Borders recycling site

A health and safety investigation has started after a worker was crushed at a recycling centre in the Borders.

The incident happened on Tuesday morning at the new £4m facility at Eshiels near Peebles.

It is understood the man suffered chest injuries in the accident, which involved a refuse lorry.

Work colleagues took him to the Hay Lodge Hospital in Peebles before he was transferred to the Borders General where his condition is improving.

Officers from the Health and Safety Executive and Scottish Borders Council, which runs the facility, are now carrying out investigations.

The council's head of environmental services, Ray Beard, said: "The operative sustained some injuries and was taken to the Borders General Hospital.

"This matter is being investigated by SBC and the HSE have been informed.

"The condition of the operative involved has improved since Tuesday."

A spokeswoman for the HSE said it was aware of the incident and was making initial inquiries.
